Fiber Futures / Denmark

Denmark “Fiber Futures” Pioneers of Japanese Textile Art, was an exhibit consisting of the 30 most important contemporary artists who make up the vanguard of the global fiber movement. Tissues become sculptures and paintings. Artists use unexpected combinations of materials and shapes to create abstract meditations of nature, and interpretations of personal identity and memory issues. While holding environmental awareness, using materials ranging from silk to cotton, hemp to paper pulp, and synthetic fibers, and following deeply traditional methods as well as incorporating the latest technologies in weaving and in dyeing, the artists created beautiful and provocative works that innovatively blend the past and present. This movement reflects the fecundity of the artistic Japanese tradition and speaks to the Japanese peoples capacity for resistance, and the ingenuity of reusing the past in order to give shape to the future 2014.1.11- 2014.3.2
